Drive-To-Work collaborates with partners across the private, public, and nonprofit sectors to help low-income or previously incarcerated persons to get their driver’s license so they can drive to work and get a job.
Reentry Education
Through a contract with the Virginia Department of Corrections, we offer a “How to Get Your License Back” virtual program and DTW Driving School Improvement Clinics. This is offered in 17 facilities across the state.
Service Providers
We work with a wide range of groups, corporations, and people, including The Dignity of Work Foundation in Chesterfield County; Mechanics of FAITH; reentry councils, social services and other nonprofits that serve the same demographic; probation and parole officers; and jails. We rely on our partners!
Courts and Higher Education
The Blue Ridge Mile Program at Washington and Lee University works with citizens needing our legal services in the Buena Vista General District Court and the Lexington/Rockbridge General District Court. Drive-To-Work launched the program in 2022 training students in W&L’s Shepherd Program for Poverty who were participating in the Blue Ridge Mile Program. W&L students help local citizens going through the court system navigate the procedures and regulations associated with restoring their driver’s licenses.
Judges refer clients from court directly to students, who have a room in the courthouse for their use. As of July 2024, the Blue Ridge Mile Program has assisted more than 100 clients.
Discussions are underway with other universities to launch similar programs.
In recognition of its successes, the Blue Ridge Mile Program received W&L’s Omicron Delta Kappa Leyburn Award for outstanding community services in 2023
